Mark Grotjahn
Mark Grotjahn (b. 1968, Pasadena, California) is an American artist currently based in Los Angeles. He received a BFA from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado and an MFA from the University of California in Berkeley, California. Grotjahn is celebrated for his dynamic abstract paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. His work explores geometric patterns, often teetering between an emphasis on formal design and more spontaneous work processes to create his characteristic style.
Grotjahn’s work has been presented at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2005); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2006–07); Kunstmuseum Thun, Switzerland (2007); Portland Art Museum, Oregon (2010); Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2012); Carnegie International, Pittsburgh (2004); Whitney Biennial (2006); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2008); Museum of Modern Art, New York (2009); New Museum, New York (2010); Kunstverein Freiburg in Freiburg, Germany (2014); among other venues.
