  • A photographic portrait of someone wearing a black short sleeve t shirt against a white metal door...
  • Born in Brooklyn, New York, Myka was raised to see the best in everything and advocate for causes unknown. She is very interested in social justice and the intersectionalities of oppression, and is also inspired by powerful black women like Angela Davis and Michelle Obama. Seeing art really inspires her because it transcends languages and cultures. Her favorite artist is Kehinde Wiley for his ability to transfer Eurocentric poses in paintings to the modern era.

Final Project
Formal Analysis: Bird
  • Bird by Kevin Beasely has two distinctive elements:  a pillar and a female figure. The pillar has a three dimensional shape, and appears solid from the outside, but on the inside from behind, it is hollow. There is a lot of negative space surrounding the pillar and around the piece. The female figure is powdered in real gold, as is the bottom pillar. However, on the sculpture there is still some surface area on the head that shows the floral print of the scarf that makes up the hood. The pillar of the piece is also not solidly gold on the inside, and has many printed clothes and other assorted items. The texture of the scarf under the gold is rough and scratchy while everything covered with gold appears smooth. Both the female figure and the pillar itself have the same texture because of the way that it was made with the resin, while the wings have a more bumpy and corrugated texture.
