Creating these stitched paintings is a much more physical process than one might think. There is quite a bit of labour; stitching, thread, cutting, trimming, slicing and stretching are involved. When the forms of the composition are cut up and lying on the floor, the canvas is blobby, wrinkly and folded. I don’t really know what the composition will look like until it is stitched and stretched together, when I can see the strong tight lines. Sometimes the composition doesn’t work well, and I have to take it apart and start all over again. I’m making a painting as I would make an object, by building different parts together on a large scale, with color and material.
