A Conversation with Thomas Crow
Join us for a free program on October 5, 2026 at 6:30 pm at the Hill Art Foundation with art historian Thomas Crow.
In his latest publication Murder in the Rue Marat, Thomas Crow revisits Jacques-Louis David’s The Death of Marat (1793) through the lens of 1960s counterculture and by way of an unexpected encounter with contemporary Chinese artist Yue Minjun. In it, he argues that in the newer usage of historical works “emerge revelations of overlooked meaning invested there from the start,” which resonates with the curatorial organization of Thucydides Fever Dream. Xin Wang and Thomas Crow will come together for a conversation highlighting specific works in the exhibition that trace deep (art) historical arcs, artistic activities near New York’s Times Square in the 80s and 90s as reflected in Liu Xiaodong’s Heavy Rain (1993), as well as his forthcoming contribution in a book on Ai Weiwei and his engagement with Marat.

Thomas Crow
Thomas Crow teaches the history of art at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU. He specializes in eighteenth-century Europe and the recent art of Europe and North America. Among his recent books are The Artist in the Counterculture: From Bruce Conner to Mike Kelley and Other Tales from the Edge (2023); The Hidden Mod in Modern Art: London 1957-1969 (2017); and Murder in the Rue Marat: A Case of Art in Revolution (2025). He is a recent Guggenheim Fellow and a contributing editor at Artforum International Magazine.
